    Slashdotted at last

Well thanks to Angus Kidman I finally got my name up in lights on Slashdot.

However this was obviously not my intention when I helped deliver the Office Extensibility session this year at Tech ED.

I did not phrase what I wanted to say well, I do not personally have any information about the feedback from beta testers regarding the ribbon, I was reflecting on information from Jensen Harris' blog where he states:

Anyway, we got a lot of feedback in Beta 2 that the collapsed Ribbon was a great idea in principle, but that it didn't work very well in the real world.

Now I did not do a good job of relaying this information by stating that the ribbon took up too much space. The fact is the ability to collapse the Ribbon has been there from early designs so the features I showed were certainly not a resounding change and not what i would call "winding back the Ribbon" as Angus kidman put it. Anything for a headline right.

It is a shame that Angus didn't report on the other more interesting features we presented at the session. The incredible work the team has done in allowing our customers and partners to extend and add new tabs and buttons to the ribbon and blending custom applications into the Office clients in general. The session seemed to be well recieved and it is disappointing that Angus took this stance in providing his feedback.

Anyway live and learn, your words can be used against you...

    XBOX360 MCE Expired Codec

So let me dust off my blog a little; I have been too busy to even think about blogging for the last 12 months.

But lot's of interesting things have been happening lately and this was one of them.

So I tried out the latest trial Nvidia codec in my MCE, but like all good things it expired and as expected I can't play anything.

But at the same time I noticed that my daughter was still watching a recorded show from the XBOX360 which was extending the MCE.

    What the...?

Sure enough it appears the extender doesn't need the primary MCE to have an active codec for it to play recorded content. I guess the XBOX can play DVD's so must have a codec built into it. Interesting, well atleast I thought so...
